# Documents

## Filters

Documents is your household's folder for vet papers: reports, lab results, vaccination records, invoices, prescriptions. Everyone in the household sees the same documents, so a paper filed on a phone at the vet's is on the kitchen iPad straight away.

*[Image: The Documents screen with a card per cat, a row of kind buttons and the list of documents, newest first]*

The list shows every document, newest first. Two filters above it narrow it down:

- **The cat cards.** Tap a cat's card to see only that cat's documents. Tap the same card again, or **All cats**, to see everything again. Each card shows how many documents that cat has.
- **The kind buttons.** Tap a kind, for example a vet report or an invoice, to see only documents of that kind. **All kinds** shows every kind again.

The two filters work together: with Felix and "Invoice" selected you see only Felix's invoices. The number on each button tells you how many documents you would see if you tapped it, taking the other filter into account. With "Invoice" selected, the cat cards count only invoices.

The kinds themselves (vet report, lab result and so on) are set up in Settings. See [Settings: documents](https://docs.gdc-world.net/cats-health/settings/#documents) to add or rename them.

A cat that has died no longer gets a card of its own. Its documents are still there under **All cats**.

## Add a document

Filing a document means giving it a title, the cat it belongs to and a kind, and attaching the file itself.

*[Image: The Add document dialog with title, cat, kind, date, file and note]*

1. Tap **Add document** at the top of the screen.
2. Enter a **Title**, for example "Check-up: gum inflammation". The title is required.
3. Choose the **Cat** and the **Kind**. If the page is filtered to a cat, that cat is preselected; otherwise the first cat is. The first kind is preselected, so check both.
4. Check the **Date**. It starts at today; change it to the date on the paper so the list stays in the right order.
5. Tap the **File** area ("**Tap to attach a PDF or photo**") and pick the file. On an iPad or phone you can choose a photo you took of the paper.
6. Add a **Note** if you like, for example "Check again in two weeks". The note is shown under the document in the list.
7. Tap **Save**. While the file is uploading the button reads **Uploading…** and the dialog stays open, so nothing you typed is lost if the connection drops. It closes once the document is saved.

What you can attach:

- PDF, JPG and PNG files.
- Up to 20 MB per file. A larger file is refused with a message under the field; take the photo again at a lower size or save the scan as a smaller PDF.

You can only add documents for cats that are alive. If **Add document** is missing, check that you have at least one living cat and at least one document kind (see [Setup gaps](https://docs.gdc-world.net/cats-health/troubleshooting/#setup)).

### Change or delete a document

1. Tap the pencil next to a document. The **Edit document** dialog opens.
2. Change the title, cat, kind, date or note. To replace the file, tap the **File** area and pick a new one. If you don't pick a new file, the current one is kept.
3. Tap **Save**.

To delete a document, tap the trash can in its row (or in the edit dialog) and confirm. The file is deleted with it, and this cannot be undone.

## Open and download

Each document can be looked at on screen or saved to the device.

- **Open:** tap the file symbol at the start of a row. The document opens in a new browser tab, where you can read it, zoom in or print it.
- **Download:** tap the arrow pointing down in the row. The file is saved to the device under its original name, for example to send it to a new vet. The screen stays where it was.

The original file name is shown in small print under each title, so you can tell which file is which.
