# Food database

## The food list

The food database holds every food your cats get. The scanner recognises a can by looking it up here, and the amounts and grams of a feeding are worked out from what is stored here. You find it in the menu under **Feeding log**, as **Food database**.

*[Image: The food database: search, the foods with barcode, content and how often they were fed]*

Each row shows:

- its photo, or the brand's initials if it has none,
- the brand and the name of the food, and its protein sources,
- its barcode (or **—** if it has none),
- the content of one container in grams,
- how often it has been fed so far (for example **28 ×**),
- two buttons: archive (or restore) and delete.

The number above the list (**TOTAL**) counts all foods. Archived foods are listed separately at the end under **Archived**, with the reason you gave.

To find a food, type part of its brand, name or barcode into **Search brand or food**. The search also finds archived foods. Below it, **All proteins** narrows the list to one protein; **No protein set** shows the foods still to be tagged.

Tap a food to open its page (see [The food page](https://docs.gdc-world.net/cats-health/food/#detail)). To add a new one, tap **Add food** at the top of the screen.

### Delete a food

Tap the bin at the end of a row and confirm **Delete this food item?**. Feedings already logged with it keep their brand and name. If you only want to stop using a food, archive it instead (see [Archive a food](https://docs.gdc-world.net/cats-health/food/#archive)): it stays in your list and can be brought back.

## The food page

*[Image: The food page: the details with the photo, the feeding summary and the feedings]*

Every food has its own page with everything about it. It has no menu entry: tap a food wherever it is listed — in the food database, in the feeding log, in the feeding analytics or on the elimination diet screens.

At the top is what is stored about the food: brand, name, barcode, content per container, typical serving, calories, protein sources and when it was added. With the calories and the content filled in, it also shows the calories of a whole container (**Calories per container**), and the typical serving shows its calories next to its grams. An archived food also shows the reason. If the food has an elimination diet status for a cat, it is listed there as well. Tap **Edit food** at the top of the screen to change any of it.

Below that, **Feeding summary** shows:

- **Fed in total** and **Fed in the last 30 days**: how many feedings there were with this food.
- **Last fed**: the date of the most recent one.
- **Average rating**: how much of this food the cats ate on average, in percent, from the share eaten of each rating (see [Ratings](https://docs.gdc-world.net/cats-health/settings/#feeding)). Unrated portions are left out; refused ones count as 0 %.

The table below has one row per cat: how often it got this food, its average rating overall and in the last 30 days, and how often it rejected it (a rating with a share of 0 %). Older meals that were logged for all cats at once have their own row, **Shared meals**.

At the bottom, **Feedings with this food** lists every feeding of it, newest first, with who got how much and each cat's rating. Tap **Load more** to see older ones.

## Add or edit a food

For each food you store what the app needs to recognise it and to work out the amounts. Take a moment over the content and the typical serving: they make every later feeding a single tap.

*[Image: The form of a food with brand, name, barcode, content per container and typical serving per cat]*

1. Tap **Add food** in the food database, or tap an existing food to change it. (If you come from the scanner with an unknown can, the form is already filled in with what was read.)
2. Fill in the fields:
   - **Brand**: for example "Animonda".
   - **Food name**: the variety, for example "Carny Adult beef". This field is required.
   - **Barcode · EAN (optional)**: the 13-digit number under the barcode. Type it, or tap the scan button next to the field and hold the barcode in front of the camera. With a barcode, the scanner in the feeding log finds this food at once.
   - **Content per container (g)**: how many grams one can, pouch or tray holds, in whole grams. From this the app works out the grams each cat gets. Leave it empty if you don't know it; then only the number of containers is recorded.
   - **Calories**: the energy as printed on the label, in two boxes: the kcal, and the grams they refer to. Labels state it differently, so copy it exactly as given: "85 kcal per 100 g" is **85** per **100**, "70 kcal per 85 g pouch" is **70** per **85**. Up to two decimals are fine, with a point or a comma (85.55 or 85,55). With the content per container filled in, the app shows below what a whole container comes to, for example "≈ 73 kcal per container". Fill in both boxes or leave both empty.
   - **Typical serving per cat**: how much one cat usually gets of this food, in containers (¼, ⅓, ½, ⅔, ¾, 1, 1½ or 2). When the content is filled in, the grams are shown next to it. Every cat starts on this amount whenever the food is scanned, so a normal feeding needs nothing but **Go**. Choose **—** if there is no usual amount; the app then suggests the amounts of the last feeding with this food.
   - **Photo**: tap **Add photo** and take or choose a picture of the can or pouch. You can also paste a copied picture or screenshot: tap **Paste photo**, or press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) while the food's page or form is open. It shows in the food list, on the food's page and on the scanner when the food is recognised, so you see at a glance that it is the right one. The picture is made smaller before it is uploaded, and the location a phone camera stores in it is removed. On a saved food the photo is changed at once; on a new one it is uploaded when you save.
3. Tap **Add food item** (for a new food) or **Save changes**.

**Cancel** or the back arrow return to the list without saving.

Changing the content later does not change feedings that were already logged; their grams stay as they were saved, until you edit and save such an entry.

## Archive a food

Archive a food that you no longer buy, or that a cat stopped eating. It then leaves the rankings in the [analytics](https://docs.gdc-world.net/cats-health/feeding-analytics/#rankings), so they show only the foods you actually choose from, but its history stays complete.

*[Image: The Archive this food item? dialog with a reason]*

1. In the food database, tap the archive button in the row of the food.
2. Under **Reason**, write why it is going out of rotation, for example "Felix no longer eats it". The reason is required.
3. Tap **Archive**.

You can also archive a food in its form: switch on **Archived**, enter a **Reason** and tap **Save changes**.

What archiving does:

- The food moves to the **Archived** part of the list, with its reason.
- It stays selectable everywhere, for example when you edit an entry, where it is marked **(Archived)**.
- If you scan it, the scanner shows it as **Archived** with the reason, and asks whether you want to use it again (see [Scan a can](https://docs.gdc-world.net/cats-health/feeding-log/#scan)).
- Its feedings no longer count in **Most fed** and **Best rated food**.

To bring a food back, tap the restore button in its row in the **Archived** part. This needs no confirmation. Logging the food again with **Activate and log** in the scanner restores it as well.
