# Getting started

## Create an account

The Recipe Book uses a GDC account, the same sign-in used by other GDC tools. Accounts are created in the GDC Tools Manager (manager.gdc-world.net), not in this app. If you already have one, you can sign in with it once you have access to The Recipe Book; see [Approval](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/getting-started/#approval).

*[Image: The sign-in screen with the email field and the links to create an account or reset a password.]*

- **1** is where you enter your email address; the password goes in the field below it.
- **2** **Create an account** opens the registration page of the GDC Tools Manager in a new tab. It names The Recipe Book as the tool you sign up for.
- **3** **Forgot password?** opens a page where you can set a new password.

Below the sign-in, links lead to GDC World, which makes the app, to a description of The Recipe Book, to this guide, and to the legal notice, privacy policy and contact form on www.gdc-world.net.

To create an account:

1. Tap **Create an account** and fill in the registration form. Before sending it, confirm in the small check box on the form that you are not a robot.
2. Open the email you receive and confirm your address with the link in it. Do this within 48 hours: an account whose address is not confirmed by then is deleted, and you simply register again.
3. Once your address is confirmed, access to The Recipe Book is requested for you. Wait until an administrator grants it (see [Approval](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/getting-started/#approval)).
4. Come back to The Recipe Book, enter your email and password and tap **Sign in**.

The app keeps you signed in on this device for about a month, so you do not have to sign in every time.

## Approval

A new GDC account has no access to any tool. Access is given per tool: an administrator has to allow you into The Recipe Book first. This keeps the recipe book private to the people who belong to it.

- **You registered through Create an account in this app:** access was requested for you when you confirmed your email. You do not need to request it again under **My tools** in the Tools Manager.
- **You already had a GDC account:** signing in shows **You have not requested access to The Recipe Book yet.** Tap **Request access** below the message. It opens **My tools** in the GDC Tools Manager with The Recipe Book offered at the top, so one more tap sends the request.

While the request waits, signing in shows **Your access is awaiting admin approval.** When an administrator decides, you get an email and a notice in the Tools Manager. Once access is granted, simply sign in again.

If your request was declined, signing in shows **Your access request was declined. You can request it again.** Tap **Request again** to ask once more. If your access was removed, you can request it again in the same way.

If you are waiting longer than expected, write to dev@gdc-world.de. Other sign-in messages are explained in [Troubleshooting](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/troubleshooting/#sign-in).

## Your household

Everyone belongs to exactly one household. All members of a household share one recipe book, one meal plan, one shopping list and the same settings, so a recipe one person adds is there for everyone.

*[Image: From registration to your household, and what a household shares.]*

- A new account starts in a household of its own.
- To cook from the same recipe book as your family, ask whoever looks after your family's household to invite you. They do this under **My household** in the GDC Tools Manager, and you accept the invitation under **My tools** there. If that does not work, write to dev@gdc-world.de.
- The name of your household is shown in the header, so you can always see whose recipe book is open.

If you are moved to another household, you see that household's recipes from then on. The recipes of your old household stay there for its other members.

If an administrator deletes your GDC account, you get an email confirming it. Recipes, plans and lists belong to the household and stay with it. To have them deleted as well, write to us through the contact form at [www.gdc-world.net/kontakt](https://www.gdc-world.net/kontakt/).

## Install on iPad or iPhone

On an iPad or iPhone you can put The Recipe Book on the home screen. It then opens full screen like a normal app, which is handy on the kitchen counter.

1. Open The Recipe Book in Safari.
2. Tap the Share button.
3. Choose **Add to Home Screen** and confirm with **Add**.

From then on, start the app from its icon on the home screen. You only need to sign in once there.

## First steps

The app works best when you set it up in this order:

1. **Settings.** Check the categories and give each one its role (**Main dish**, **Protein / meat**, **Side**, **Vegetable**), then the tags and your kitchen devices. The planning assistant needs the roles to suggest meals. See [Settings](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/settings/#categories).
2. **Add a recipe.** Bring in your first recipes from a website, Instagram, a photo or PDF, or type one in by hand. See [Add a recipe](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/import/#methods).
3. **Cook and judge it.** New recipes start in the **Testing** phase. When you finish cooking, the app asks **How was it?**: give a rating and choose **Add to rotation**, **Archive it** or **Still deciding**. See [After cooking](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/recipe/#after-cooking).
4. **Plan.** Put dishes into the week by hand in the [Planner](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/planner/#week), or let the [planning assistant](https://docs.gdc-world.net/recipe-book/planning-assistant/#open) suggest a week. It only suggests recipes in the **Active** phase.
